FDA Warns Against Fake Diabetes Products

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 29 million Americans are living with diabetes. This month the Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning against using products that were illegally marketed with promises to cure, prevent or treat diabetes.

The FDA has advised consumers do not use these products because they could contain harmful ingredients. They also advise customers that these products could be sold as over the counter medicines when in reality, they should be marketed as a prescription medication. The FDA is concerned that these products might cause people currently using effective treatments to discontinue their diabetes treatments. When someone stops properly managing their diabetes, they are at a serious risk of developing health complications.

The FDA warns consumers if it sounds too good to be true, it’s most likely a fraud. Common phrases to look out for include:

  • “Lowers your blood sugar naturally.”
  • “Protects you kidneys, eyes and blood vessels from damage.”
  • “Replaces your regular diabetic medicine.”
  • “Natural cure for diabetes.”
  • “Treatment to relieve all symptoms of diabetes.”

In November 2016, the FDA issued written warnings to several companies indicating that they have violated federal law. After performing laboratory tests on these illegally marketed drugs, the FDA found undeclared active ingredients known to cause serious harm, especially if the products are taken with other diabetic treatments.
